JUNE 7th, 2017
BURLINGTON, VT - The Sanders Institute, a nonprofit, progressive educational organization, is launching today under the direction of eleven progressive leaders who will serve as its Founding Fellows.
The stated mission of the Sanders Institute is to revitalize democracy by actively engaging individuals, organizations and the media in the pursuit of progressive solutions to economic, environmental, racial and social justice issues.
“Our country is at a crossroads. People of all political persuasions are awake and engaged in the political process,” said Dr. Jane O’Meara Sanders, one of the Fellows. “We at The Sanders Institute believe that a vital democracy requires an informed electorate, civil discourse and bold thinking.” Sanders called the Fellows “an extraordinary team of progressive leaders, economists and educators who will raise awareness of the issues facing our country and will offer progressive solutions to solve them.”
The Founding Fellows of the Institute are Professor Robert Reich, Bill McKibben, Danny Glover, Representative Tulsi Gabbard, Dr. Stephanie Kelton, Ben Jealous, Dr. Cornel West, The Honorable Nina Turner, Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Harry Belafonte, and Sanders.
The Sanders Institute will host an active website featuring reports, op-eds, and original content from the Fellows and from other individuals and organizations offering thought-provoking perspectives. "Serving as a conduit for civil discourse about the issues facing our nation and encouraging broader participation of progressive voices in the media are two of the Institute's goals," said Sanders.
Providing non-partisan political education seminars is an initiative that will begin in earnest this coming weekend. The Sanders Institute and National Nurses United will offer four such seminars as a joint educational project at the 2nd Annual People's Summit in Chicago.
